'Baroque' Pushing Clay. Nelson 2024
‘Baroque’ and ‘Strange Fruit’ are examples of my present focus; a playful exploration of process, form and narrative . By creating hand-built vessel forms—although here sculptural rather than functional— my making sits within a tradition of clay that has roots way back in prehistory and which still occupies a prominent place in todays cultural practice.
Visually my work tends to align with the organic and natural world as a result of the way I build the pieces.
Clay is an inherently responsive and versatile a material and pushing the surfaces plays a crucial role in my work with bold gestural textures, snowy glazes, and luscious metallics. My current practice embraces the beauty of imperfection and the ongoing process of discovery.
